Design First for Motorola rugged PDA
Motorola MTC100 Motorola’s UK CG and ISS Division contracted Display Solutions to design, project manage and manufacture a new rugged PDA platform, MTC100, incorporating TETRA secure adio technology for first responder applications – a product which is unique in the marketplace. The development, which incorporated Motorola's own software and validation teams in the UK, China, Poland and Penang, was a truly global program. Development highlights were as follows :- Functional prototypes for customer validation and sales initiatives within 6 weeks of contract award. The PDA was fully validated to operate over a -20C to +60C temperature range Extended life testing was performed at 75C to validate Motorola target failure rates
During development and customer validation, the MTC100 passed the following stringent ruggedisation tests :- Humidity to MIL-STD-810F, Method 507.4MILSTD (50C at 95% humidity for 10 days, operating) Salt fog to MIL-STD-810F, Method 509.4 (8 hrs salt fog soak, 24hrs dry) Drop to MIL STD 810F, Method 516.5, Procedure IV. (26 drops from 4ft over 5 units onto solid concrete) Ingress to IP54 (blowing dust and rain)
MTC100 was designed in Taiwan by a cross-function team of 15 engineers and project managers under Display Solutions' direct guidance. The Windows Mobile 5 image for the unit was developed in the UK. MTC100 is now manufactured in Taiwan to a very tight production specification, and is being deployed within the EU market into a variety of mission critical applications. Product highlights are :- Windows Mobile 5 Operating System with Security enhancements Intel X-Scale 520MHz Processor with 128MB RAM and 196MB FLASH ROM Rugged (4ft drop, 26 times onto concrete), IP54 design, -20 to +60C operation Integral Motorola TETRA Modem (TOM100) Integral digital still and video camera, GPS, IEEE802.11b/g wireless LAN and Bluetooth
